For the manufacture of a single shirdak carpet, wool of approximately five sheep is required. The process is slow and time consuming. Traditionally, Shyrdak mats were made by women. The collected wool is collected clean, washed, dried and dyed. After the wool has dried, a pattern is applied to the even background, which is then saturated with soap and rolled up with water and literally pressed, this process is repeated.
